The Power of Breath: How Conscious Breathing Helps Us Stay Grounded in Times of Change

Over the past month, I’ve noticed a lot of strong energetic shifts, both in the world around us and within ourselves. It feels like the pace of life has been moving in waves: moments of intensity followed by moments that invite us to slow down and listen more closely to what’s happening inside.

During times like this, I often find myself coming back to something simple: my breath. When things feel uncertain or overwhelming, the breath becomes a quiet place to return to. Just a few steady inhales and exhales can remind the body that it’s safe to settle.

The Druids had a beautiful way of understanding this connection. The Druids thought, breath was closely tied to the idea of life force ~ the animating spirit within us. Breath wasn’t just a biological function; it was seen as the thread that anchors the spirit to the body, the rhythm that keeps us present in our physical experience of the world. By paying attention to our breathing, we reconnect with that anchor and return to ourselves.

Interestingly, I’ve been exploring this idea in a very practical way lately through flute lessons. Learning the flute isn’t just about producing sound, it’s about learning how to breathe with intention.

This past month has also reminded me how powerful collective rhythms can be. Across different cultures and traditions, communities have been gathering to mark meaningful moments in the year. The celebration of Imbolc welcomes the first stirrings of spring and light returning after winter. Lunar New Year brings families and communities together to honour renewal and new beginnings. And Ramadan invites reflection, devotion, and shared meals at sunset that strengthen bonds between people.

Each of these celebrations, in their own way, draws us back to community, to the reminder that we move through change not just as individuals but together. Just like the breath moves in and out, there is a rhythm between the inner and outer worlds: personal reflection and shared experience.

Maybe that’s the quiet lesson of this past month. When the energy around us feels strong or shifting, we can return to the breath. And from that grounded place, we can reconnect not only with ourselves, but with the communities that help hold us through times of change.
