A New Chapter at Oca: Book Club for Meditation and Self-Discovery
I’m often reminded that self-study—svādhyāya—isn’t just a concept we speak about in class, but a living part of the path. I’ve always loved books as a doorway inward, offering a space to pause and grow wisdom. But lately, I’ve noticed how challenging it can be to carve out the time and mental space to truly settle into reading. To not just skim words, but to absorb. To let them land.
This is why I’m so excited to introduce something new at Oca: our very first Book Club.
This offering is rooted in a simple but powerful intention to create a space where we can gently return to the practice of learning and reflection, together.
For our first session, we’ll be diving into “How to Meditate: A Practical Guide to Making Friends with Your Mind” by Pema Chödrön. This book holds a special place in my heart. It was part of the reading list during my foundational yoga teacher training, and each time I return to it, I uncover something new. It seems to evolve alongside me, offering fresh insights depending on where I am in my own journey.
There’s a honesty in Pema Chödrön’s words that makes meditation feel accessible—less about perfection, and more about presence. About meeting ourselves exactly as we are.
Whether you’re newly curious about yoga philosophy or have been studying for years, this book club is open to you. We’ll gather over tea, explore key passages, and gently move through some of the meditation practices outlined in the book. There will be space to reflect, to share (if you wish), and to listen.
I hope you’ll join me for this first chapter at Oca next month on Sunday May 10th, at 1pm.
