Holding Space: Lessons from the Mat
This past month has reminded me how personal and unpredictable the journey of yoga can be. Every time we come to the mat, we bring our full selves, our breath, our emotions, our energy, and sometimes even our struggles. Finding the right practice for where you are in that moment is such an important part of yoga. Some days it’s about movement and strength, and other days it’s simply about finding stillness and allowing yourself to rest.Recently, during one of my classes, a student experienced a panic attack towards the end of the session. In that moment, I had to respond quickly and quietly, to hold space for that person without disturbing the rest of the group, and to support them in the gentlest way possible. It was a powerful reminder of how vulnerable we all are, and how essential it is to create a safe, compassionate environment in the studio. What touched me deeply was that this student came back to class later on. That small act of trust and courage meant a lot, it reminded me of why I love this work and the responsibility that comes with it.Teaching yoga continues to teach me. I’m so grateful for every student who shows up, in whatever state they arrive, and for the opportunity to share this practice that connects us all in such a human, heartfelt way.
Namaste,
