Moving from Winter to Spring: Yoga, Ayurveda and Seasonal Renewal
I don’t know about you but for me this year winter has felt long, damp, and cold. As we begin to meander gently toward spring, I’m reminded of the cyclical nature of ourselves just like the seasons.
Winter can be a reflective time, a time for rest and contemplation, refueling through conservation and introspection. And while all of this has been true for me at times through this winter, I’m traveling toward spring feeling a little heavy and yearning for some lightness.
In Ayurvedic traditions, Spring is associated with Earth and Water elements - creating a fertile, rich environment where seeds of potential can begin to sprout and emerge, bloom and grow. We clear away the heaviness of winter and invite the light back in. In the Chinese tradition (which we work with in Yin yoga), Wood is the element that governs spring and it is easy to see why - just like new woody growth begins to emerge from beneath the ground and blossoms spread across the trees, the Wood element is expansive, dynamic, and full of creative potential.
If winter was the time to quietly contemplate and plan, then spring is the time to put those plans into action. And I am definitely feeling this pull toward putting ideas into motion and clearing away the heaviness of winter.
Here are a few ideas you might incorporate into your life during this moment of transition between the seasons:
Wake up a little earlier and experience the light. Open the curtains to take in the light or even better, step outside for a few moments each morning.
Lighten what you take in. Think about incorporating some of the fresh produce of the season. In the Chinese tradition, the taste of the Wood element is ‘sour’ and key foods are lemon/lime, vinegar, fresh greens (think baby kale and asparagus) and sprouts.
Invite a gentle decluttering. Spring is an amazing time to let go to clear space. This could be on a physical level with a gentle decluttering of your home, or on an internal level - perhaps you journal on what ideas or behaviours you can let go of to make space in this new season.
Follow small sparks of energy. What are you curious about? What feels energising? Remember this transition takes time so start to follow these sparks of inspiration, knowing you don’t need to accomplish everything all at once.
Rather than a sudden shift, think of this movement toward Spring as a gradual unfurling - like a seed quietly and slowly unfurling from its sleep beneath the ground - keeping some of winter’s steadiness and peace while inviting in a little more lightness and allowing room for inspiration to grow.
With love,
