Join Our December Solstice Storytelling Ceremony Inspired by Ancient Traditions
A couple of months ago, I managed to catch one of the final days of the British Museum’s “Ancient India: Living Traditions” exhibition. Though not explicitly about yoga, signs of it’s fingerprint could be seen throughout.
Walking among sculptures, carvings, and textiles, I was struck by how alive it all felt. These objects aren’t frozen relics—they carry centuries of devotion, artistry, and daily life, still resonating in the present. Evident in the stillness of Buddha, carefully painted on delicate silk, an intricate carving of a dancing Ganesha, and a smooth statue of a Jain enlightened teacher, humanity’s continued exploration of consciousness is depicted in an ongoing dialogue with the past.
It dawned on me that even as yoga becomes polished and filtered for the Western gaze, it could be argued that this is just the latest development in a lineage of interpretation and cultural absorption that goes back thousands of years. Our need for ceremony, connection and community is honoured here at Oca as much as our daily yoga classes. Join us on December 21st for our Solstice Storytelling Ceremony; “Inspired by the ancient tradition of gathering around the fire, we’ll sit together by candlelight for an evening of story, reflection and the gentle medicine of Cacao.”
With gratitude,
Seb
